Written with love to my dad, Lewis Muhlestein

I was born in the city, but my daddy had country roots
Changin’ after work each day from Rockports to farmin’ boots
Missin’ country livin’, the rodeos and hayrides too
Kept his past alive, his kids as his farmin’ crew
Leavin’ the pavement, plowin’ the dirt
Tradin’ the malls for the mangers
I know where I’m goin’ ‘cause I know where my daddy’s been
Front porch swings and talking to strangers
Chickens scratchin’ the lawn
I loved daddy’s (just outside the city limits) farm
Daddy went to school, got his PhD, following his dream
Fell in love, married a city girl, they’re still a dang good team
He settled into city livin’, always lookin’ back
This white collar man had a blue collar past
Leavin’ the pavement, plowin’ the dirt
Tradin’ the malls for the mangers
I know where I’m goin’ ‘cause I know where my daddy’s been
Front porch swings and talking to strangers
Chickens scratchin’ the lawn
I loved daddy’s (just outside the city limits) farm
Daddy comes from the city to visit, yeah, he’s still amazed
I ended up with a cowboy, 80 miles from his boyhood days
Where stars and sunsets every night not dimmed by city lights
Walkin’ hand in hand, fireflies glowin’ – everything just seems right!
Leavin’ the pavement, plowin’ the dirt
Tradin’ the malls for the mangers
I know where I’m goin’ ‘cause I know where my daddy’s been
Front porch swings and talking to strangers
Chickens scratchin’ the lawn
I loved daddy’s (just outside the city limits) farm
Front porch swings and talking to strangers
Chickens scratchin’ the lawn
I loved daddy’s (just outside the city limits) farm
I loved daddy’s just outside the city limits farm
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love you DAD! (Love you too, mom! - You're the one who had to put up with the farm!)
